Since the 1960s, millions of women have chosen silicone gel-filled breast implants to augment their breasts and enhance their contours. With years of cooperation between patients, doctors and manufacturers, these implants have been continually improved.
'These insights inspired POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics, a medical device company based in Germany, to become specialists in breast implants coated with micropolyurethane (Microthane),' says Therese Turner, owner of JT Medical, who distribute POLYTECH breast implants in Australia.
Manufactured and packaged in Germany, the micropolyurethane coating of the implant is a reliable and long-lasting option for patients looking to enhance their contours. Available in both textured and smooth ranges, the shell of POLYTECH implants consists of several layers of silicone. It is also equipped with a diffusion barrier, which prevents the gel from permeating through the shell into surrounding tissue.
The medical-grade silicone gel used to fill POLYTECH implants is form-stable and returns to its original shape after mechanical impact. When cut in two, the gel in the implants shows its soft but cohesive consistency. In terms of tactility and movement, it is designed to closely resemble the natural breast.
The first implants were manufactured in the 1960s and had a smooth surface. Since the mid 1970s, micropolyurethane-coated implants have been in use, and by the end of the 1980s, textured implants had been introduced. Today, implants with all three of these surfaces are available for women wanting to enjoy a fuller breast shape.
Due to a natural reaction of the host organism, a capsule is formed around all foreign bodies inserted into the tissue, implants included. This capsule can close tightly around the implant and contract, deforming the implant and therefore the shape of the breast. It can become very hard and cause pain. This is referred to as 'capsular contracture' and can typically only be corrected with secondary surgery to replace the implants. It is the most common complication of breast augmentation surgery.
Micropolyurethane-coated implants have been shown to result in capsular contracture rates of around three percent compared with around 15 percent with smooth implants and approximately six percent with textured implants.
